The Apocalypse of Christina Rossetti and Oscar Wilde: A Comparative Reading of the Two Authors Between Eco-criticism and Eco-theology

The aim of this research is to compare the main works of Christina Rossetti and Oscar Wilde, with a focus on the theme of apocalypse. The comparison develops in four chapters. The first chapter analyses the separation between humankind and Nature, providing a philosophical, literary and historical background to analyse the apocalyptical anxieties of Rossetti and Wilde. Moreover, the theme of apocalypse is examined through a two-faceted model: the ecological apocalypse - which addresses the slow but progressive environmental decay of Earth - and the apocalypse of the human - which indicates the collapse of the anthropocentric paradigms that envision humanity in a position of superiority towards Nature. The second chapter compares Rossetti's poem "Bird Raptures" and Wilde's short story "The Nightingale and the Rose", elaborating the eco-critical implications of the two texts as two warnings on the ongoing ecological apocalypse, accentuated by the Industrial Revolution. The third chapter provides an eco-theological analysis of the two authors through the analysis of Rossetti's "De Profundis" and Wilde's homonymous letter. This comparative reading demonstrates a red thread that connects Wilde and Rossetti: a mystical experience within the engagement with the natural world, which is the manifestation of God on Earth. A possible Parousia - and thus the Second Coming of Jesus Christ which is not a catastrophe but a restorative event - paves the way for the culmination of the fourth chapter, which illustrates the apocalypse of the human through the comparative analysis of Rossetti "The Face of the Deep: A Devotional Commentary on the Apocalypse" and Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Gray". The apocalypse of the human occurs through a divine judgement - that directly manifest within the laws of Nature - which destroys the anthropocentric ego-hierarchy which sees humanity over Nature, reconnecting the two together.

L'obiettivo di questa ricerca è comparare le principali opere e tematiche di Christina Rossetti e Oscar Wilde, indagando il tema dell'apocalisse. La comparazione è articolata in quattro capitoli. Il primo capitolo analizza la separazione tra umanità e Natura, costruendo un background storico, filosofico ed eco-critico per analizzare il tema apocalittico nei lavori di Rossetti e Wilde. Inoltre, il tema dell'apocalisse viene analizzato sotto due modelli complementari: l'apocalisse ecologica - che avviene lentamente e gradualmente - e l'apocalisse dell'umanità - che indica il collasso dei paradigmi antropocentrici che vedono l'umanità in una posizione di superiorità rispetto alla Natura. Il secondo capitolo confronta la poesia "Bird Raptures" di Christina Rossetti e il racconto breve di Oscar Wilde "The Nightingale and the Rose", approfondendo le implicazioni eco-critiche dei due testi come avvertimenti riguardo ad un'apocalisse ecologica graduale, accentuata dalla Rivoluzione Industriale. Il terzo capitolo offre un'analisi eco-teologica dei due autori, analizzando la poesia "De Profundis" di Christina Rossetti e alcuni estratti dell'omonima lettera di Wilde. Questa lettura comparativa dimostra la presenza di un filo rosso che connette Wilde e Rossetti: l'esperienze mistica dietro l'incontro con la Natura, che è la manifestazione terrestra di Dio. La lettura di una possibile Parousia, e quindi di una Seconda Venuta di Gesù Cristo come evento non distruttivo ma ristorativo del cosmo, connette la lettura eco-teologica all'analisi eco-critica, preparando la culminazione e l'apocalisse del quarto capitolo. Il quarto capitolo affronta l'apocalisse vera e propria di Wilde e Rossetti, analizzando "Il Ritratto di Dorian Gray" e "The Face of the Deep: A Devotional Commentary on the Apocalypse" come un'apocalisse che avviene attraverso il giudizio divino, che si manifesta nelle leggi della Natura e che distrugge l'ego-gerarchia antropocentrica che vede l'umanità dominare sulla Natura, riconnettendo i due.
