“Sotto il cielo c’è posto per tutti”. La filosofia della storia in Guerra e pace di Lev Tolstoj

This paper aims to investigate the conception of history that emerges from Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace. To this end, we will briefly try to illustrate how the project for this novel was born in response to the historical and socio-economic context of Russia in the mid-nineteenth century, without neglecting some formal and stylistic aspects. The boundary between literature and philosophy in the work of the Russian writer is often, in fact, very thin and literary choices often become an expression of the author’s theoretical positions. The attention to detail alternating with long philosophical digressions, the criticism of the figure of the hero and the re-evaluation of the role of the individual, then concentrated in the concept of the “differential of history”, and the opposition between the hystorical world (war) and the human world (peace) seem in fact to lead to a conception of history that is not purely deterministic, but rather to an attempt, on the part of the author, to show how freedom and necessity are interwined in the lives of his characters.

Questo contributo si propone di indagare la concezione della storia che emerge da Guerra e pace di Lev Tolstoj. A tal fine si tenterà brevemente di illustrare come il progetto per questo romanzo nasca in risposta al contesto storico e socio-economico della Russia di metà Ottocento, senza trascurare alcuni aspetti formali e stilistici. Il confine fra letteratura e filosofia nell’opera dello scrittore russo è spesso, infatti, molto sottile e le scelte letterarie si fanno sovente espressione delle posizioni teoriche dell’autore. L’attenzione al dettaglio alternata a lunghe digressioni filosofiche, la critica alla figura dell’eroe e la rivalutazione del ruolo del singolo, concentrate poi nel concetto di “differenziale della storia”, e la contrapposizione tra mondo storico (la guerra) e il mondo umano (la pace) sembrano infatti condurre a una concezione non puramente deterministica della storia, bensì a un tentativo, da parte dell’autore, di mostrare come libertà e necessità si intreccino nelle vite dei suoi personaggi.
