This dissertation examines the various ways in which the doubts surrounding the existence of free will and its impact on responsibility are dramatized in contemporary English fiction. The analysis focuses on apocalyptic narratives as scenarios in which evident inevitability stresses the tension between intentional choice and determinism. The study begins by tracing the evolution of the concept of ‘apocalypse’ from its religious origins to its modern literary and cultural meaning. The discussion will linger on the morbid pull these narratives exert on the public imagination, before turning to the introduction of the philosophical debate on determinism and free-will. Within this context, the exploration is deepened through the thought of Sigmund Freud, Friedrich Nietzsche, Jean-Paul Sartre and Hannah Arendt whose ideas foreground questions of instincts and fate as well as radical freedom and responsibility. These theories are then applied to the literary analysis of J.G. Ballard’s The Drowned World and Jeanette Winterson’s The Stone Gods, exploring how these novels stage the limits of agency and investigate the uncertain boundaries between fate and freedom, survival and self-destruction.

Abstract
Ballard’s The Drowned World and Jeanette Winterson’s The Stone Gods, exploring how these novels stage the limits of agency and investigate the uncertain boundaries between fate and freedom, survival and self-destruction.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
