This dissertation examines some of the characteristics (origins, dynamics, consequences) of “nuclear anxiety” during two crucial moments of the Cold War, namely the nuclear crises in Cuba (1962) and the Euromissiles (1979). The research relates, in the first two chapters, the historical reconstruction of the events that brought humanity closer to the possibility of what came to be called the “nuclear holocaust!” with an analysis of the media and popular reception, concluding with some philosophical-theological reflections on the “nuclear apocalypse”. By means of an interdisciplinary approach (analysis of diplomatic documents, analysis of the press of the time and multimedia productions, data and surveys on the orientations of citizenship and scientific studies on the “nuclear winter”), the work shows how international crises not only accentuated the level of geopolitical tension, but also indirectly favoured the creation of an imaginary capable of transforming collective fear into a relevant factor from the point of view of both politics and culture. The concluding chapter is aimed at reconstructing certain aspects of the philosophical debate on the nuclear period, comparing in particular the analyses of Günther Anders, Karl Jaspers and Jacques Derrida, and assessing the extent to which these perspectives contribute to explaining the persistent contemporary difficulty in imagining and managing the risks of nuclear power and its possible self-destruction.

Abstract
The concluding chapter is aimed at reconstructing certain aspects of the philosophical debate on the nuclear period, comparing in particular the analyses of Günther Anders, Karl Jaspers and Jacques Derrida, and assessing the extent to which these perspectives contribute to explaining the persistent contemporary difficulty in imagining and managing the risks of nuclear power and its possible self-destruction.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
