Rail tourism constitutes a form of cultural, experiential, and sustainable travel that is garnering growing international interest. This study examines the role and significance of railways within the tourism sector, emphasizing their economic, social, and environmental impact, with a particular focus on the Italian context. The analysis explores the contribution of rail tourism to the enhancement of the regions it traverses, underscoring its potential for fostering local economic development and preserving railway heritage. Furthermore, it investigates its capacity to mitigate environmental impact, positioning it as a viable and sustainable alternative to other modes of transportation. A central aspect of this study concerns the strategies adopted to promote rail tourism, with a specific emphasis on infrastructure modernization and the implementation of policies aimed at sustainability. Particular attention is devoted to the examination of successful initiatives, such as the restoration of disused railway lines through the Greenways project, the promotion of rail tourism by the FS Foundation through its Italian Tourist Trains, and the Binari senza Tempo program, developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism. Additionally, the study highlights the pivotal role of digital technologies and marketing strategies in the revitalization of historic rail routes, facilitating the creation of more immersive and accessible travel experiences. Through qualitative and quantitative analysis, it identifies national and international best practices, proposing replicable models to foster rail tourism as a sustainable cultural and ecological alternative. Lastly, future scenarios and strategic proposals are outlined to integrate rail tourism within a broader model of sustainable mobility, aligning with the objectives of ecological transition and cultural heritage valorization. This study ultimately demonstrates that rail tourism not only serves as a catalyst for Italy’s tourism and economic development but also represents an opportunity to rediscover and revalorize the historic railway network—reviving the past with a renewed, sustainable, and innovative identity.

Abstract
This study ultimately demonstrates that rail tourism not only serves as a catalyst for Italy’s tourism and economic development but also represents an opportunity to rediscover and revalorize the historic railway network—reviving the past with a renewed, sustainable, and innovative identity.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
