This thesis explores the impact of Cultural Institutes on national soft power, with a specific focus on the image of Italy and France in Sweden. My interest in this topic stems from my internship experience at the Italian Embassy in Stockholm, where I observed the role of cultural diplomacy actors, and from the need to fill a gap in the scholarly literature, which often focuses on theoretical analyses of soft power at the macro level, neglecting empirical studies on the concrete effectiveness of these institutions. The research analyzes the impact of cultural events organized by the Italian and French Cultural Institutes in Sweden, investigating how these events influence the local public's perception of the national image. The empirical analysis is divided into two sections. The first studies the cultural policies of the two countries through semi-structured interviews with representatives of the Cultural Institutes and embassies, comparing the strategies adopted with the guidelines of the respective Foreign Ministries. The second section focuses on cultural and artistic events, evaluating their effectiveness through participatory observation of 43 events and a survey of 204 participants. The methodology integrates qualitative and quantitative approaches, including interviews, field observations and statistical analysis of the collected data.
