The aim of this thesis is to provide a preparatory study for a digital edition of the Old Saxon Poem Heliand. The study of this poem and its textual tradition will be the starting point for a discussion on the current theory on ecdotics and digital humanities. This thesis will also provide an analysis of the current methods for the encoding of textual information using the TEI Guidelines for the purpose of creating a critical edition, highlighting the many advantages connected with the creation of digital critical editions, as well as the shortcomings and possible areas to be researched in future.
