Despite extensive research on the topic of the nikkei Brazilian community in Japan, especially in terms of their history of migration, less has been said about this group in regards to their self-representation on social media, compared to the representation by traditional media. This study addresses this gap, utilizing a qualitative and comparative approach, by analysing 38 articles from the Mainichi Shinbun online site (representative of traditional media) and 5 pieces of content each from 10 profiles of young nikkei Brazilian influencers on Instagram (representative of social media). The main objective of this thesis is to understand how nikkei Brazilians get represented by each medium in contemporary Japan and the differences in representational tools and themes surrounding each discourse. The results revealed there is a substantial divergence between the two. The Mainichi discourse tends to frame nikkei Brazilians as a community facing various integration difficulties that require social management, albeit through a sympathetic lens. On the other hand, Instagram self-representation is strongly rooted in individual agency, as creators control their own image, opening up a broader range of representations not necessarily tied to their cultural background. These findings suggest that while social media does not change structural inequalities, it can provide a space for nikkei Brazilians to take control over their visibility and circumvent the restrictive categories from mainstream discourse.
Comparing media representations: nikkei Brazilian youth’s self-representation on social media vs. their representation by traditional media outlets

Abstract
| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
