Does it matter who is Queer: Inclusion as cultural practice and policy

This master’s thesis explores diversity and inclusion in culture, specifically focusing on the LGBTQ+ or queer community using a combination of analytical, comparative and applied approaches. Using literature related to gender, identity and power, mixed with history of sexuality, case studies and cultural management resources, this work looks at how queerness manifests itself in specific temporal and cultural contexts, and what are the existing models of intercultural dialogue, inclusion and participation in culture which can impact this social group. The case studies, conducted for the purpose of this thesis, aim to showcase the lived experience of the LGBTQ+ population in different countries, operating in cultural organizations of different composition and size. In combination with the literature, the end goal of this work is to produce a toolkit, a sublimation of all the (in)adequate praxis and experience to present a realistic overview of inclusivity, when it comes to queerness.
