This research explores the meaning of the term innovation and how that meaning changes within cultural organisations. In its first two chapters, the thesis traces the historical development of the concept and its transformations within museums and cultural institutions; it then focuses on practice-based research and draws on film and media studies to question how knowledge itself is produced. This path gives rise to the question guiding the thesis: how can practice-based and videographic research contribute to the understanding of innovation processes in cultural organisations? I explore this question from a first-person perspective through H-FARM/FutureShots, Recontemporary and CREA - Cantieri del Contemporaneo, drawing on personal experiences ranging from workshops to curatorial work. Bringing together original footage and existing audiovisual material, I developed the video essay A Simple Idea alongside the written thesis, and videographic research enabled me to use montage, duration and sound-image relations as analytical operations. Split-screen comparison tested the connections between the cases, leading me to reconsider my initial assumptions and recognise how innovation acquires meaning within each organisation’s specific circumstances. Making the video essay thus also made my own practice an object of reflection. Editing choices shaped what I could understand, and the video became both a research device and a research output. Studying innovation led me to experiment with the language through which I investigated it, questioning both organisational change and my own way of observing it. Abstract
