This paper presents a contrastive study of the translation of phraseological units in the audiovisual field of subtitling and in the Spanish–Italian language pair, with the primary aim of identifying and analysing any patterns and trends that may characterise their linguistic transfer. To this end, the research is structured around three main areas: firstly, the identification of the techniques from the reference taxonomy that have been most frequently used in the translation of such units; secondly, the analysis of the factors that may lead to the mitigation of phraseological units of a vulgar nature, assessing whether such mitigation is effectively a result of censorship practices or rather of spatio-temporal constraints inherent to audiovisual translation; finally, the development of an error taxonomy to categorise the errors arising throughout the translation process.
