This thesis explores how Russian musicians use national identity as a marketing resource within a polarized political climate. The study includes pro-government and opposition artists, with the focus on the construction of meaning by both groups using shared cultural icons. The thesis is based on prior work in three categories: identity creation via music, perceiving cultural codes, and creating a brand image for the musician. In addition to these categories, the study considers the musician as a multi-media brand utilizing sound, visual images and public communications. Finally, the literature review describes the Russian context, including official government symbols, federal laws restricting the rights of the arts community, folklore themes, and unofficial visual codes associated with Soviet and Post-Soviet times. These components will provide the foundation for developing the analytical model to be applied in the case study. A comparative case study methodology was employed to select and analyze contemporary Russian musicians. I analyzed selected artists' music videos, song lyrics, visual identities and media presence. The two groups of artists utilized the same iconographic codes, but presented them in different ways. Artists who are supportive of the government directly affirmatively represented the icons; while opposition artists utilize irony, distortion or deconstruction techniques when representing the same themes. The results demonstrated that national identity today may serve as a flexible branding tool in Russia. Depending upon the artistic intention and environmental context, the same symbols may represent completely opposite messages. Ultimately, the results highlight that music serves as an important medium for symbolic conflict within modern-day Russia. It also provides additional insights into research regarding cultural conflict field and enhances an understanding of music branding in highly restrictive environments.
