I Provveditori alle Fortezze: un’analisi della magistratura e delle sue competenze attraverso documenti d’archivio (sec. XVI-XVIII)

This paper aims to examine the Venetian magistracy of the Provveditori alle Fortezze in terms of its institutional and operational development, with particular attention to the responsibilities it assumed and the role it played within the defensive system of the Republic of Venice between the 16th and 18th centuries. After highlighting the scant attention paid by historiography to this magistracy and analyzing the main existing contributions, the context of administrative disorder and operational fragmentation that preceded its establishment will be outlined. Following an analysis of several resolutions aimed at regulating the magistracy in its fundamental aspects, the Provveditori alle Fortezze archive preserved at the Venice State Archives will be examined, reconstructing its history and seeking to clarify the causes of its current fragmented state. Particular attention will be devoted to the registers and bundles preserved in envelopes 36 and 37, chosen as a sample for study due to the diverse documentation they contain and because they cover almost the entire duration of the magistracy. Based on these documents, the study will examine some of the office’s primary responsibilities, including the management and preservation of drawings and models, the selection and hiring of military engineers, and the system for the procurement and distribution of provisions. The analyses conducted will help expand our understanding of a field that has yet to be thoroughly explored, highlighting its role in the organization and oversight of construction sites for Venetian fortifications in the modern era.

Il presente elaborato si propone di esaminare la magistratura veneziana dei Provveditori alle Fortezze dal punto di vista del suo sviluppo istituzionale e operativo, con particolare attenzione alle responsabilità che essa assunse e al ruolo che svolse all’interno del sistema difensivo della Repubblica di Venezia tra il XVI e il XVIII secolo. Dopo aver evidenziato la scarsa attenzione riservata dalla storiografia a questa magistratura e aver analizzato i principali contributi esistenti, verrà delineato il disordine amministrativo e la frammentazione operativa che ha preceduto la sua istituzione. Successivamente verranno analizzate alcune deliberazioni finalizzate a regolamentare la magistratura nei suoi aspetti fondamentali. Seguirà un esame del fondo dei Provveditori alle Fortezze conservato presso l’Archivio di Stato di Venezia con l’obiettivo di chiarire le cause del suo attuale stato frammentario. Particolare attenzione sarà dedicata ai registri e ai mazzi conservati nelle buste 36 e 37, scelti come campione di studio in virtù della documentazione eterogenea in esse contenuta e in quanto abbracciano quasi interamente l’arco temporale della magistratura. Sulla base da questi documenti, verranno approfondite alcune delle principali competenze dell’ufficio, tra cui la gestione e conservazione di disegni e modelli, la selezione e l’ingaggio degli ingegneri militari, nonché il sistema di approvvigionamento e distribuzione delle provvisioni. Le analisi condotte contribuiranno ad ampliare la conoscenza di una magistratura ancora scarsamente indagata, mettendo in luce il suo ruolo nell’organizzazione e nella supervisione nei cantieri delle fortificazioni veneziane in età moderna.
