This thesis investigates the evolution of LEGO’s storytelling strategies across media and explores how its phygital interaction model can inform innovative approaches to cultural communication in museum contexts. The research adopts an interdisciplinary framework combining media and communication theory, museum studies, game studies and learning sciences to examine the relationship between narrative, play and embodied interaction. The first part analyses the transformation of museums from collection-centred institutions to participatory narrative environments, focusing on gamification, interactive learning and brand-driven exhibition models. The second part examines LEGO as a transmedia ecosystem, exploring its brand storytelling, world-building strategies and educational philosophy grounded in playful, constructionist and embodied learning. Particular attention is given to LEGO’s phygital experiments and participatory communities as examples of hybrid communication and immersive engagement. The final part presents the design of Build the Past: When Time Breaks, a prototype for a phygital museum experience inspired by LEGO’s narrative and interaction strategies. Through storytelling, tangible interaction and hybrid immersion, the project proposes a model for engaging younger audiences in cultural heritage. The thesis argues that LEGO’s integration of play, storytelling and phygital interaction offers a valuable framework for rethinking museum communication, shifting the focus from technology-driven immersion to participatory, embodied and narrative cultural experiences.
