Local Productive Systems in Motorsport: A Comparative Analysis of the Italian Motor Valley and the British Motorsport Valley

The motorsport industry is one of the most knowledge-intensive and globally connected sectors. Over time, two leading hubs in the motorsport industry and, specifically in the Formula One field, have emerged: the Motor Valley in Emilia-Romagna, Italy, and the Motorsport Valley in the United Kingdom. While both are highly specialised Local Productive Systems, they have followed distinct developmental paths in terms of innovation networks, institutional frameworks and global competitiveness. This thesis aims to explore which structural, institutional and policy-related factors may explain the persistence of these differences. Through a comparative analysis, the study examines structural similarities and divergences, with specific attention to the role of innovation dynamics, local institutions and policy, networks and place-leaders in shaping LPS’s evolution and performance. The research is based on secondary analysis of academic literature, industry reports and official documents, and it is complemented by an interview with a relevant place-leader. The comparison provides insights into how different institutional configurations shape innovation and competitiveness in technologically advanced LPSs.
