Enzo Sereni (1905-1944): "Non vi fu nessuno come lui né prima né dopo"

This work outlines the figure of Enzo Sereni (1905-1944), a Roman Jew who emigrated to Palestine at the age of twenty-two, the first Italian chalutz (pioneer), and who, in an extreme attempt to save Italian Jews in their homeland, returned to Italy and was then killed in Dachau. The focus of the work was on Sereni's experience within Zionism, both in the youthful phase of joining the movement and aliyah, and later in her activity in Palestine where she founded kibbutz Ghivat Brenner. Among his frequent missions abroad as an emissary on behalf of the Histadrut that brought him into contact with the Jewish communities of the diaspora, we focused on those in Europe and Egypt for their value in the fight against Nazi-fascism, without neglecting the missions in the United States of America and Iraq. The complexity of the figure of Sereni required his contextualization in the historical events of Mandatory Palestine and the disputes between Jews, Arabs and British. To reconstruct the figure of Sereni, we have based ourselves on his writings published in the magazines of the time, the correspondence with his brother Emilio, as well as on his essays on the Jewish question, the Arab question and the origins of fascism. Space was also given to the testimonies of the people who met him. The picture emerges of an enigmatic, complex person, of an intellectual, socialist Zionist and anti-fascist in whom thought was not separated from action 

Questo lavoro delinea la figura di Enzo Sereni (1905-1944) ebreo romano che a ventidue anni emigrò, primo chalutz (pioniere) italiano, in Palestina e che nel tentativo estremo di salvare gli ebrei italiani nella loro patria, ritornò in Italia per poi venire ucciso a Dachau. L'attenzione del lavoro si è concentrata sull’esperienza di Sereni all’interno del sionismo, sia nella fase giovanile di adesione al movimento e dell’aliyah, che successivamente nella attività in Palestina ove fondò il kibbutz Ghivat Brenner. Tra le sue frequenti missioni all’estero come emissario per conto dell’Histadrut che lo portarono a contatto con le comunità ebraiche della diaspora ci si è concentrati su quelle in Europa ed in Egitto per la loro valenza nella lotta al nazifascismo, senza tralasciare le missioni negli Stati Uniti d’America ed Iraq. La complessità della figura di Sereni ha richiesto una sua contestualizzazione nelle vicende storiche della Palestina Mandataria e delle contese tra ebrei, arabi e britannici. Per ricostruire la figura di Sereni ci si è basati sui suoi scritti pubblicati sulle riviste del tempo il carteggio con il fratello Emilio, nonché sui suoi saggi sulla questione ebraica, sulla questione araba e sulle origini del fascismo. È stato dato spazio anche alle testimonianze delle persone che lo incontrarono. Ne esce il quadro di una persona enigmatica, complessa, di un intellettuale, sionista socialista ed antifascista in cui il pensiero non fu disgiunto dall’azione.
