This thesis aims to apply the theories of behavioral economics and behavioral finance to art investments within the private banking industry. The objective is to test and validate the insights provided by the literature on behavioral economics and finance through a qualitative analysis based on discussions with specialized professionals from the two banks selected as case studies: Banca Aletti and UniCredit. The first part of the thesis presents the theoretical framework on which the empirical analysis is based. It begins by examining the main theories of traditional finance applied to investments and then focuses on behavioral finance theories, highlighting how they differ from and expand upon the traditional approach. The thesis also explores the characteristics of art investments, with particular attention to artworks as an alternative asset class and to the markets in which they are traded. The second part adopts a qualitative empirical approach. Through questionnaires and direct discussions, it seeks to verify whether the behavioral theories presented in the literature can be observed in practice, based on the experience of professionals working at the two financial institutions. Using the Keirsey Temperament Sorter, a behavioral profiling tool, the study analyzes the behavioral profiles of a sample of regular clients of the Art Advisory services offered by Banca Aletti and UniCredit. The aim is to identify recurring behavioral patterns and client types that may be useful in the advisory process. The thesis is based on the idea that the role of both the private banker and the art advisor requires a solid understanding of clients’ psychological and behavioral characteristics. Recognizing common patterns, biases, heuristics, and decision-making tendencies is essential for providing advice that meets the needs of private clients. The thesis concludes that the role of the modern advisor should increasingly resemble that of a behavioral coach. Understanding clients’ psychological and behavioral dynamics is essential for providing a more complete advisory service, helping clients make informed decisions in art investments and supporting the preservation of their wealth.
