This thesis investigates the relationship between environmental and financial performance in the European steel industry, a highly emission-intensive sector subject to strong regulatory pressure. Unlike much of the existing literature, which relies on aggregate ESG scores, the study employs quantitative, intensity-based environmental indicators—such as emissions and energy efficiency—to better capture firms’ operational environmental performance. The empirical analysis focuses on a sample of ten European steel producers over the period 2017–2024, with a specific focus on Feralpi Group as a case study. The research is grounded in the Natural-Resource-Based View, the Porter Hypothesis, and stakeholder theory, suggesting that environmental performance may affect financial outcomes through efficiency gains, innovation, and risk management. The study aims to contribute to the literature by providing sector-specific evidence and addressing key measurement issues, particularly the limitations of ESG scores and the relevance of more granular indicators.
Questa tesi analizza la relazione tra performance ambientale e performance finanziaria nel settore siderurgico europeo, un contesto industriale altamente emissivo e caratterizzato da forti pressioni regolatorie. A differenza della letteratura prevalente, che si basa su punteggi ESG aggregati, lo studio adotta indicatori ambientali quantitativi e basati sull’intensità, come emissioni ed efficienza energetica, al fine di cogliere in modo più diretto la performance operativa delle imprese. L’analisi empirica si concentra su un campione di dieci aziende europee nel periodo 2017–2024, con un focus specifico su Feralpi Group come caso di studio. Il lavoro si colloca all’intersezione tra Natural-Resource-Based View, Porter Hypothesis e stakeholder theory, evidenziando come la performance ambientale possa influenzare i risultati economici attraverso efficienza, innovazione e gestione del rischio. I risultati attesi mirano a contribuire al dibattito empirico fornendo evidenza settoriale e metodologica, sottolineando i limiti degli ESG score e l’importanza di misure più granulari.
