In the world of Portuguese-speaking countries, one of the institutions that has mostly driven the development and reflection on bilingual education in Mozambique is the Eduardo Mondlane University. The aim of this study is twofold – investigate this formative experience in the academic context and explore the perspectives and relations between the participants regarding teaching-learning practices in two UEM master’s degree courses: Bilingualism and Bilingual Education and Portuguese as a Second Language. In addition, the study aims at analysing the issues and the impact of the courses on the students’ academic and professional careers. The case study builds upon class observations and interviews with professors and students along three months of field work. It led to the identification of three thematic cores, inevitably intertwined –the courses’ impact and issues and their respective development proposals, as illustrated by the participants; the relation that exist between professors and students and, lastly, an array of issues apparently unrelated to the UEM, that refer to a broader political perspective. One of the most urgent issues on the professors’ end is the reduced number of enrolments in the Bilingual Education course, that ultimately could threaten the future of academic investigation. On the other hand, the issues put forward by the students are economical, bureaucratic and of academic demand.
