This thesis investigates how human judgment and Artificial Intelligence are changing procurement and the role of the strategic buyer. In the past, procurement was mainly based on structured models and analytical tools. However, in real situations decisions are often complex and influenced by uncertainty, changing markets, and relationships with suppliers. The work combines theory and practical evidence using Information Processing Theory to understand how companies manage large and complex information. Artificial Intelligence helps process data faster and supports important activities such as finding suppliers, negotiating, and managing risks. However, the research shows that technology alone is not enough. Good results depend on how well companies manage information and develop the right skills. Through the analysis of several case studies, the thesis identifies a gap between the availability of advanced digital tools and the ability of companies to use them. This gap is caused by issues such as low data quality, limited digital skills, and weak organizational structures. The introduction of Generative AI creates new opportunities, such as better predictions and more advanced analysis, but also requires stronger control and clear rules. The study shows that AI does not replace the buyer. Instead, it changes the role of the buyer, making it more strategic. Buyers must interpret data, evaluate AI results, and make decisions that consider the company’s goals. Human skills such as negotiation, communication, and critical thinking remain essential. In conclusion, the future of procurement is based on collaboration between humans and AI. Companies that are able to combine technology with human expertise will achieve better performance and stronger competitive advantage.
