La magia di Harry Potter-Traduzione di tre articoli di translation studies cinesi

This thesis focuses on an analysis of the main aspects of the Chinese translation of the Harry Potter series. It is divided into three sections. The first section provides a concise biography of Harry Potter’s author J.K. Rowling, and subsequently reviews linguistic and translation-centered studies carried out in China, in order to illustrate the impact of the Harry Potter series on international fantasy and children’s literature. The second section presents an Italian translation of three selected Chinese texts: the first one examines English-Chinese (and vice versa) translations of spells in Harry Potter and Journey to the West. The second one focuses on the Chinese translations of Harry Potter spells, drawing on Venuti’s theory of foreignization and domestication as a theoretical framework. Finally, the third text emphasizes the importance of context in translation by comparing the Chinese names of fantastic beasts in the PRC and Taiwanese editions of Harry Potter. The third and final section offers an analysis of the three source texts, discussing the main problems and difficulties encountered during the translation process, as well as the strategies and solutions adopted in the final Italian translation. As part of this analysis, a glossary of specific terms from the source texts is included. In conclusion, this thesis attempts to explore the existing scholarship on the Chinese translation of Harry Potter, while also providing new insights into the translation of fantasy literature. A bibliography can be found in the appendix at the end of this paper.

Questa tesi ha come oggetto l’analisi degli aspetti salienti della traduzione cinese dei romanzi di Harry Potter. L’elaborato presenza tre sezioni. La prima sezione delinea una breve biografia dell’autrice J.K. Rowling e presenta gli studi linguistici e traduttologici condotti sulla serie di Harry Potter in Cina, al fine di illustrarne l’impatto sulla letteratura fantasy e per l’infanzia a livello internazionale. Nella seconda sezione sono riportate le traduzioni in italiano di tre testi cinesi specialistici: il primo testo propone l’analisi linguistica delle traduzioni in cinese degli incantesimi in Harry Potter e, viceversa, delle arti magiche presenti nel classico della letteratura cinese Viaggio verso Occidente. Il secondo testo, invece, si focalizza sulle traduzioni in cinese degli incantesimi e formule magiche in Harry Potter prendendo come riferimento la prospettiva di addomesticamento e straniamento. Infine, il terzo testo definisce il ruolo del contesto in ambito traduttivo, ponendo a confronto le traduzioni che le case editrici Crown Publishing Company Ltd. di Taiwan e People’s Literature Publishing House della Repubblica Popolare Cinese hanno proposto per i nomi di creature magiche nelle rispettive edizioni di Harry Potter. La terza sezione è la parte più importante della tesi, in quanto viene dedicato spazio al commento linguistico-traduttologico. Vengono pertanto messe in evidenza le specificità linguistiche dei testi di partenza, così come vengono descritte le difficoltà incontrate nel processo di traduzione e le soluzioni adottate nei testi di arrivo. Nella sezione finale dell’elaborato, è stato realizzato un glossario contenente i termini-chiave del lavoro di analisi e traduzione, mentre una bibliografia è riportata nell’appendice a fine elaborato. In conclusione, l’obbiettivo di questa tesi è fare luce sugli studi traduttologici condotti su Harry Potter nel contesto sinofono, nella speranza di offrire nuovi spunti di riflessione sulla traduzione della letteratura fantasy.
