This thesis analyzes the concept of humor in Luigi Pirandello, using the essay L’Umorismo and the novel Il fu Mattia Pascal as its main points of reference. The aim is to demonstrate that Pirandello’s humor is not merely a comic effect, but rather a poetic and aesthetic mechanism grounded in reflection and the “sense of the opposite.” It allows for a critical understanding of the crisis of modern identity, the fragmentation of the subject, and the tension between life and form. After a concise reconstruction of the historical-literary context between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the thesis examines the fundamental theoretical categories developed by Pirandello, distinguishing humor from the comic and from satire, and exploring the role of the mask, perspectival relativism, and the decentralization of the self. On this basis, the work focuses on Il fu Mattia Pascal, read as a narrative laboratory of humor, in which devices such as double identity, the narrative voice, the name, the signature, the mirror, and the mask make visible the impossibility of a stable subjectivity.
