In the contemporary global economic landscape, the international expansion of firms has transitioned from a strategic choice to an absolute necessity for survival and growth. For Italian enterprises, characterized by a strong manufacturing heritage and high-quality craftsmanship, the People’s Republic of China represents the most significant and also complex frontier of the twenty-first century. This thesis aims to explore the complex process through which Italian companies navigate this transition, moving from their domestic context into the Chinese context, which is one of the world's most dynamic and challenging business environments. In just four decades, the Chinese economic system has experienced a transformation without precedent, shifting from a poor and centrally controlled model to its status as a global superpower. The turning point of this evolution was the progressive liberalization initiated after the 1978 Open Door policy under the leadership of Deng Xiaoping, which transformed China into the factory of the world. China has now entered a new phase characterized by slower but more sustainable growth, not only driven by just fixed investment and exports but also by private consumption, innovation, and services. This shift in the Chinese economic model presents for Italian enterprises a unique opportunity. The flourishing Chinese middle class is becoming more and more sophisticated and demanding and is no longer looking for quantity but for quality. This is where the Made in Italy label finds its greatest strength and opportunity to grow. However, the internationalization success in China is a process full of challenges. The business environment is often described as a double-sided world, where modern technology coexists with deeply rooted values that came from a millenarian tradition. Foreign firms must deal with uncertainty of political situation, bureaucratic opacity, and the persistent threat of intellectual property theft. Furthermore, the cultural distance between Italy and China remains a significant barrier. Concepts such as Guanxi (personal connections) and Mianzi (face) are not merely cultural curiosities, but they are the invisible rules that govern business negotiations and organizational success. The objective of this research is to empirically and theoretically analyse the various internationalization strategies adopted by Italian companies in China, identifying common patterns of success and the structural barriers that characterize this specific corridor, and also, giving an overview of the economic and political situation in China and the possible development of the Chinese market, with socio-cultural insights.
