This study examines funeral practices in Crete between the Late Bronze Age (LM IIIC) and the Early Iron Age (SM), focusing on ritual transformations, collective identity dynamics and the social contexts that emerge from them. Using a systematic cataloguing of burial sites, grave contexts, and ceremonial practices from available archaeological evidence, the main elements of continuity and change between the two periods are explored. The analysis highlights how burial practices can reflect redefinitions of status, networks of exchange and power, as well as practices of communal memory. Through a theoretical-empirical approach, the work proposes an interpretative framework that links ritual transformations to broader social changes, contributing to the debate on identity evolution in Crete during a phase of technological and cultural transition.

Abstract
This study examines funeral practices in Crete between the Late Bronze Age (LM IIIC) and the Early Iron Age (SM), focusing on ritual transformations, collective identity dynamics and the social contexts that emerge from them. Using a systematic cataloguing of burial sites, grave contexts, and ceremonial practices from available archaeological evidence, the main elements of continuity and change between the two periods are explored. The analysis highlights how burial practices can reflect redefinitions of status, networks of exchange and power, as well as practices of communal memory. Through a theoretical-empirical approach, the work proposes an interpretative framework that links ritual transformations to broader social changes, contributing to the debate on identity evolution in Crete during a phase of technological and cultural transition.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
