This work aims to analyze the impact on Georgia of the secessionist aspirations of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, its de jure regions. The work focuses, in particular, on how these internal struggles, now considered “frozen,” compromise the territorial integrity, political status, and path toward democratic development of the South Caucasus country, which emerged as an independent and unitary state following the collapse of the Soviet Union, taking into account the spectre of Moscow's influence. The research process lasted about a year. The first phase took place during an exchange in Georgia in the first semester of the 2024-2025 academic year and involved both the consultation of secondary sources, enriched by academic courses taken at Tbilisi State University, which contributed to a holistic contextualization (from a historical, anthropological, and geopolitical perspective) of the research topic, and data collection. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with the local population, with the primary aim of reporting a psycho-social response on the root causes of the division and how it still affects their lives. The target group of interviewees consisted specifically of IDPs (Internally Displaced People), people of Georgian ethnicity who resided in the two regions before the outbreak of the conflicts, who have acquired a certain level of education and who currently belong to the academic community. In addition, the opportunity to visit an IDP camp in Tserovani, near Tbilisi, proved to be an equally crucial moment to witness firsthand the hardship, but also the resilience, of the victims of a conflict that goes beyond their human experience. The second phase, conducted at Ca' Foscari University of Venice, focused on reorganising the data and integrating it with additional bibliographic material, along with the revising the work and structure of the thesis according to the continually evolving needs of the research.
