This thesis examines the diachronic development of clitic placement in Piedmontese, focusing on restructuring contexts and compound tenses. Through a qualitative analysis of selected texts from three chronological stages (the 13th century, the 17th century, and contemporary data), the study investigates whether proclisis gives way to enclisis diachronically, whether restructuring contexts and compound tenses develop in parallel, and whether the distribution of clitic classes reflects a functional hierarchy. Special attention is also devoted to possible variation depending on the type of restructuring verb.

Abstract

This thesis examines the diachronic development of clitic placement in Piedmontese, focusing on restructuring contexts and compound tenses. Through a qualitative analysis of selected texts from three chronological stages (the 13th century, the 17th century, and contemporary data), the study investigates whether proclisis gives way to enclisis diachronically, whether restructuring contexts and compound tenses develop in parallel, and whether the distribution of clitic classes reflects a functional hierarchy. Special attention is also devoted to possible variation depending on the type of restructuring verb.
