The pros and cons of Multi-Pov through the analysis of contemporary novels and the self-published novel All that Lies Ahead

The thesis analyzes the pros and cons of multi-perspective narration, first defining its theoretical framework through Stanzel, Genette, Cohn and Bal, whose categories clarify the concepts of voice, focalization, and representation of consciousness. This theoretical apparatus provides the basis for questioning what multi-perspective adds to a novel and why it can be particularly effective within an authorial narrative. In the second part, the thesis examines three contemporary novels that use multi-perspective as their underlying structure. The analysis shows how the alternation of points of view broadens the understanding of the story, highlights contrasts between different perceptions, and allows the reader to construct a more complex and multifaceted view of events, while also highlighting the risks associated with dispersion, redundancy, and loss of narrative cohesion. Finally, I present my self-published novel on Substack, All That Lies Ahead, as a practical case study. The plurality of voices allowed me to explore the characters and their motivations in greater depth, but also to confront the structural difficulties of the technique directly. The combination of theory, analysis, and practice demonstrates how multi-perspective can enrich storytelling, provided it is handled with awareness and precision.

La tesi analizza i pro e i contro della narrazione multiprospettica, definendone prima il quadro teorico attraverso Stanzel, Genette, Cohn e Bal, le cui categorie permettono di chiarire i concetti di voce, focalizzazione e rappresentazione della coscienza. Questo apparato teorico offre le basi per interrogarsi su che cosa la multi prospettiva aggiunga a un romanzo e perché possa risultare particolarmente efficace all’interno di una narrazione autoriale. Nella seconda parte, la tesi esamina tre romanzi contemporanei che impiegano la multi prospettiva come struttura portante. L’analisi mostra come l’alternanza dei punti di vista ampli la comprensione della storia, metta in luce contrasti tra percezioni diverse e permetta al lettore di costruire una visione più complessa e sfaccettata degli eventi, pur evidenziando i rischi legati a dispersione, ridondanza e perdita di coesione narrativa. Infine, presento il mio romanzo auto pubblicato su Substack, All That Lies Ahead, come caso di studio pratico. La pluralità di voci mi ha permesso di approfondire i personaggi e le loro motivazioni, ma anche di confrontarmi direttamente con le difficoltà strutturali della tecnica. L’insieme di teoria, analisi e pratica dimostra come la multi prospettiva possa arricchire la narrazione, purché gestita con consapevolezza e precisione.
