This study aims to examine the representation of women in two romances of the Lancelot-Grail cycle, the Estoire del Saint Graal and the Queste del Saint Graal, with the goal of understanding the role women play not only in the narrative but also in the spiritual quest for the Grail. Starting from the medieval context shaped by the biblical legacy of original sin, the analysis shows how this heritage influences the narrative construction of the feminine. A constant tension also emerges between purity and temptation: female figures embody both danger and salvation, becoming essential elements in the knights’ journey. In the Estoire, the wife of Joseph of Arimathea appears as the first keeper of the sacred, Sarracinte represents the strength of faith, while Flégétine embodies conjugal loyalty. In the Queste, Guinevere is an ambivalent figure who distracts Lancelot from his mission, Perceval’s sister represents the absolute model of purity, and the recluses serve as spiritual guides. The conclusions show that although they are not direct protagonists, women influence the knights’ decisions, development, and destiny. Their ambivalence reveals a structural paradox: marginal figures in terms of action, yet indispensable on the symbolic and narrative levels for understanding the deeper logic of the Grail cycle.

Abstract
Their ambivalence reveals a structural paradox: marginal figures in terms of action, yet indispensable on the symbolic and narrative levels for understanding the deeper logic of the Grail cycle.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
