The present thesis offers a critical analysis of one of the most renowned authors of the eighteenth century: Ann Radcliffe. While scholars of the period generally agree that Radcliffe established herself as one of the Gothic writers of her time ─ if not the greatest ─ it is equally true that she is now regarded as a forgotten pioneer. Once a central figure in the English literary canon, it could be argued that today Radcliffe is only studied within academic circles, as she is no longer a household name. Nonetheless, in the last few years, Gothic scholars have attempted to reinstate her name through curated publications, conferences, and other media. Similarly, this dissertation seeks to explore and advocate for Radcliffe by examining the correlations between the author and her fictional characters. As Gothic scholars have pointed out, significant analogies can be drawn between her life and her characters. Therefore, this dissertation aims to shed new light on Radcliffe’s life by analysing these literary parallels. While this final paper seeks to offer a deeper analysis of the author’s figure through her heroines, it also considers the condition of women in the eighteenth-century. Therefore, the parallels between Radcliffe’s life and the lives of her characters in novels such as The Romance of the Forest (1791), The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794), and The Italian (1797) provide critical insights into the condition of women of the eighteenth century.
