VIOLENCE IN SOVIET REVOLUTIONARY CINEMA

The main focus of this dissertation is the theme of violence, analysed through nine Soviet films of the 1920s: Battleship Potëmkin, Mother, October, The End of St. Petersburg, Earth, Old and New, Zvenigora, Arsenal, and Storm over Asia. The main aim of my work is to draw a comparison between these works, to delineate their similarities and, most of all, their differences. The dissertation is divided into four main chapters, which reflect the themes of the 1905 Revolution, the October Revolution, Collectivisation, and the Civil War. With this structure, I aim to highlight the progressive evolution of film directors, such as Eisenstein’s October, which can be seen, in some aspects, as a more advanced version of Battleship Potemkin.

Il tema principale di questa tesi è la violenza, analizzata attraverso nove film sovietici degli anni '20: La corazzata Potëmkin, Madre, Ottobre, La fine di San Pietroburgo, Terra, Vecchio e nuovo, Zvenigora, Arsenale e Tempesta sull'Asia. L'obiettivo principale del mio lavoro è quello di mettere a confronto queste opere, delinearne le somiglianze e, soprattutto, le differenze. La tesi è suddivisa in quattro capitoli principali, che riflettono i temi della Rivoluzione del 1905, della Rivoluzione d'Ottobre, della collettivizzazione e della guerra civile. Con questa struttura, intendo evidenziare l'evoluzione progressiva dei registi cinematografici, come Eisenstein con Ottobre, che può essere visto, sotto alcuni aspetti, come una versione più avanzata di La corazzata Potëmkin.
