The thesis aims to explore how motivation, defined as the drive toward achieving a specific action or goal, plays a pivotal role in the study of literary texts in English and in the consequent acquisition of appropriate linguistic competencies. The first part of the thesis is theoretical, aiming to provide a general framework for understanding the role of motivation. It then delves into the significance of motivation in the study of literary texts in a foreign language and the impact that strengthening motivation has on students' literary education. Particular emphasis is placed on the student as the primary motivator of their own learning and on the teacher's role in fostering student motivation. Furthermore, reference is made to the various factors involved in the teaching and learning process and to how motivation can be effectively stimulated using the diverse resources available to both teachers and students. The second part of the thesis focuses on the practical creation of teaching units (UdA) on topics related to English literature. These units aim to highlight not only the creative and innovative potential of teaching design but also to showcase engaging and stimulating approaches and strategies where the student becomes the protagonist of their own learning process. These teaching units incorporate innovative and specific approaches designed to enhance students’ motivation in studying literary texts in English, while simultaneously strengthening linguistic skills, critical thinking, and creativity. In the concluding section of the thesis, interviews with English language and literature teachers from various high schools in the province of Treviso are presented. These interviews provide feedback on the effectiveness of the teaching units I developed, particularly concerning the central theme of my thesis—motivation as a starting point for the effective and lasting learning of literary texts in English.
