Degrowing Labour: What would work in a post-growth future look like?

Starting from the necessity of redefining work in order to build an alternative to the current ecocidal capitalist economy, the present dissertation has the aim of answering the following question: what does the future of work look like according to degrowth? The thesis is going to be articulated in three chapters. The first chapter aims to trace a brief overview of the degrowth theory: it will start by underlining its main critical targets, from the early realization of the ecological limits of economic growth; the analysis of capitalist neoliberal economy and myths; the critique of GDP; to then present broader theorizations of degrowth made by contemporary thinkers. The second chapter will highlight the points of convergence between marxist theory, ecology, and degrowth: it will start with Gorz’s political ecology; to then delve into ecomarxist and ecosocialist thinkers. The third chapter will present the characteristics of work in a degrowth or post-growth society. First, we will examine the work policies that degrowth theorists have written about: Working Time Reduction or Work Sharing; Minimum and Maximum income; cooperatives; care work; and the possibilities that degrowth would bring to life beyond work; aided by the theorizations mentioned in the first chapter. We will finally briefly outline the contact points between the degrowth claims and labour unions, and the degrowth policies that have already been implemented nowadays.

Dalla necessità di costruire un immaginario del lavoro che ci aiuti ad allontanarci dalla società capitalista ed ecocida in cui viviamo, nasce la domanda alla base della presente trattazione: come sarà il lavoro in un'ipotetica futura società della decrescita? La tesi sarà articolata in tre capitoli. Nel primo si affronterà la teoria della decrescita in senso ampio: in primis ci si concentrerà sui suoi obiettivi polemici, ovvero l’incompatibilità della crescita infinita con i limiti ecologici della terra; le criticità e i miti legati all’economia capitalista e neoliberista; e la critica al PIL come unico strumento di misura del benessere di una nazione. In seguito vedremo quali sono le alternative che la teoria della decrescita propone. Il secondo capitolo avrà l’obiettivo di mettere in luce i punti di convergenza fra teoria marxista ed ecologia: partendo dall’ecologia politica di Gorz, si andranno ad affrontare in seguito alcuni autori ecomarxisti ed ecosocalisti. Il terzo capitolo analizzerà l’immaginario del lavoro che i teorici della decrescita hanno delineato nel corso degli ultimi decenni. Prima si parlerà delle vie percorribili: la riduzione dell’orario di lavoro, il salario massimo e minimo, le cooperative, il lavoro di cura, e anche le possibilità che la decrescita aprirebbe alla nostra vita oltre il lavoro. Infine, si presenteranno i casi in cui le istanze della decrescita sono state assimilate dai movimenti sindacali, da alcuni paesi o alcune aziende
