This study aims to identify the challenges and benefits that result from the implementation of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems in small and medium enterprises. It explores how ERP systems are redefining business operations by streamlining processes, supporting better decision-making, and enhancing overall efficiency while identifying the core determinants and conditions that shape successful ERP adoption in SMEs. The research is conducted using SLR (Systematic Literature Review) methodology where peer-reviewed articles are sourced from the Web of Science database in order to analyze them systematically. The review focuses on technological, organizational, and external environmental dimensions that impact ERP implementation. A thematic approach is used to synthesize findings and identify key patterns in the literature. Additionally, a case study on Fortuny Venezia is conducted to provide practical insights into ERP implementation challenges and benefits in the context of a real-world SME. The findings of the study show that ERP systems offer SMEs substantial benefits in terms of operational efficiency, and enhanced decision-making, among other things, to SMEs. However, there are numerous challenges to the successful implementation of ERP systems in SMEs, with the prime being financial constraints, lack of technical know-how of the users, and resistance to change within the organization. The study brings to light the best practices and strategies that can be employed in mitigating these barriers and hence optimizing ERP use. However, the study is limited since it relied only on data from the Web of Science database, which may eliminate relevant research from other sources. However, the results are valuable since they provide valuable insights and practical recommendations by addressing implementation challenges for SMEs, policymakers, and ERP providers. This research is distinguished by the fact that it focuses on trends in the ERP space that are relevant to current practices and innovations in the industry, addressing stakeholders with practical actions for ERP optimization in an evolving environment of technological change.
