Tradurre il passato per il futuro: una proposta di traduzione multimodale in LIS di tre lettere selezionate dalle Turkish Embassy Letters

Literary works have always provoked a fervent debate within the context of translation, often witnessing the ongoing conflict between scholars and professionals in this field. The increasing number of studies on different translation theories and practices has, therefore, enhanced the potential for confrontation between diachronically and diamesically divergent linguistic contexts. Thus, the aim of this thesis is to explore the role and impact of translation choices by presenting a translation from English to Italian Sign Language (LIS) of three letters that have been selected from the collection Turkish Embassy Letters written by the author Mary Wortley Montagu. Focusing on the analysis about different practices in the field of translation studies, including gender theories and the analysis of power in translation. The purpose is to understand how translation choices influence meanings in cultural as well as identity representation within the literary work, ultimately aiming to make historical texts accessible to new audiences from a more inclusive perspective. Specifically, this paper explores in depth how the translation of literary works into LIS both mirrors and shapes concepts related to identity and culture which are objects of the author's own investigation, including how these are being adapted to fit the new linguistic and cultural context. Therefore, in order to provide a theoretical and exhaustive framework concerning the topics addressed in the thesis, the structure adopted includes an introductory chapter devoted to the introduction of the main theories and research of relevance to the translation analysis. A second chapter will follow focusing on the life and works of Lady Montagu, as well as the textual analysis of the three selected letters. The third chapter, on the other hand, will be dedicated to the actual translation of the three letters in which a new approach to intramorphemic translation is introduced, namely, the integration of a glossary within the translation. Finally, the fourth and final chapter focuses on the comment about the translation work analyzing the choices made during the process and their implications in the passage from English to LIS. This section plays a central role in the investigation, allowing for critical thinking about the ways in which translation can influence the cultural and linguistic transposition of the original text.

Le opere letterarie hanno da sempre suscitato un grande fervore all’interno del contesto traduttivo, vedendo spesso lo scontro tra studiosi e professionisti nel settore. L’intensificarsi degli studi sulle diverse teorie e pratiche traduttologiche ha, pertanto, aumentato la possibilità di confronto tra contesti linguistici diacronicamente e diamesicamente distanti. In questa tesi, infatti, l’obiettivo è quello esplorare il ruolo e l'impatto delle scelte traduttive attraverso una proposta di traduzione dall’inglese alla lingua dei segni italiana (LIS) di tre lettere selezionate dalla raccolta Turkish Embassy Letters scritte dall’autrice Mary Wortley Montagu. Partendo dall'analisi su diversi studi in ambito traduttologico, tra cui le teorie di genere e l’analisi del potere nel discorso, si punta a comprendere come le scelte traduttive influenzino il significato e la rappresentazione culturale e identitaria all'interno dell’opera, con l’obiettivo ultimo di rendere i testi del passato accessibili a nuovi pubblici in un'ottica più inclusiva. In particolare, il presente lavoro esplora nel dettaglio il modo in cui la traduzione di opere letterarie in LIS riflette e plasma concetti legati all'identità e alla cultura che sono oggetto d’osservazione dell’autrice, e come questi ultimi vengano adattati al nuovo contesto linguistico e culturale. Per fornire un quadro teorico e completo riguardo agli argomenti affrontati nella tesi, la struttura adottata prevede un primo capitolo introduttivo dedicato alla presentazione delle principali teorie e ricerche più importanti per l’indagine traduttologica. Seguirà un secondo capitolo dedicato all’approfondimento della vita e delle opere di Lady Montagu, oltre all’analisi testuale delle tre lettere selezionate. Il terzo capitolo, invece, sarà dedicato alla traduzione vera e propria delle tre lettere in cui viene presentato un nuovo approccio alla traduzione intramorfica, ovvero, l’aggiunta di un glossario interno alla traduzione. Infine, il quarto ed ultimo capitolo si concentra sul commento traduttologico e sull'analisi delle scelte traduttive e sulle loro implicazioni nel passaggio dall'inglese alla LIS. Questa sezione riveste un ruolo centrale nell'indagine, permettendo di riflettere in modo critico sulle modalità attraverso cui la traduzione può influenzare la trasposizione culturale e linguistica del testo originale.
