This thesis examines the effectiveness of Italian cultural diplomacy in promoting national culture in the context of international relations, focusing on the case study of the Italian Cultural Institute of Los Angeles (IIC LA). The research explores how culture, broadly viewed as both tangible and intangible assets, including arts, language, traditions and innovation, serve as tools to promote diplomatic ties and increase Italy's global influence. The first chapter provides an overview of cultural diplomacy and its link to soft power, emphasizing how culture can act as a non-coercive means of building international relations and enhancing national image. The second chapter traces the historical development of Italian cultural diplomacy, highlighting key moments such as the postwar period and the rise of “Made in Italy,” while addressing long-standing challenges such as fragmentation and limited resources. In the third chapter, the focus shifts to the Italian Cultural Institutes (IICs) as key players in Italy's diplomatic strategy. Their role as a hub for cultural promotion and bilateral cooperation is analyzed, as well as their adaptation to digital tools during the COVID-19 pandemic. Special attention is given to the structural and operational challenges faced by IICs. The IIC LA case study in the final chapter evaluates its efforts in one of the most culturally diverse and influential regions in the United States. The analysis examines how the IIC promotes Italian language and arts, collaborates with local partners, and integrates cultural and economic diplomacy to strengthen Italy's presence abroad. Addressing the question of how effective Italian cultural diplomacy is in the context of diplomatic relations, this thesis highlights both achievements and areas for improvement. It concludes with recommendations for improving the overall impact of Italian cultural diplomacy through innovation, strategic coordination, and adaptability.
