Supernatural Excess. Maximalist Narrative and Magical Realism in Salman Rushdie's The Satanic Verses and Roberto Bolaño's 2666

This thesis aims to examine the relationship between magical realism and maximalist narrative through the analysis of two masterpieces of contemporary literature, namely Salman Rushdie's The Satanic Verses and Roberto Bolaño's 2666. The study provides a thorough exploration of how these texts create multi-layered, surreal and eerie worlds that subvert and challenge Western literary tradition. The thesis will be divided into four main chapters. Firstly, a theoretical framework of Maximalist Narrative will be discussed. The history and development of maximalism in literature will be described through foundational works of major critics, namely Tom LeClair, Franco Moretti, Frederick R. Karl, and Stefano Ercolino. The second chapter will focus on magical realism. The mode, which originated with Franz Roh's theory of Magischer Realismus, is widely recognised for its Latin American legacy. However, as it will be argued, magical realism is very much a product of postmodernity in a wider sense. Indeed, the intertwining of reality and supernatural elements enables post-colonial authors to explore identity ad cultural hybridity. Rushdie's The Satanic Verses will be analysed in the third chapter, and the fourth chapter will analyse Bolano's 2666. The postmodern nature of the novels and their postcolonial legacy allow the authors to explore cultural boundaries, and analyse themes such as identity, displacement, and belonging.

Questa tesi esamina la relazione tra realismo magico e romanzo massimalista attraverso l'analisi di due capolavori della letteratura contemporanea: I versi satanici di Salman Rushdie e 2666 di Roberto Bolaño. Verrà analizzato come questi romanzi costruiscano mondi stratificati, surreali e inquietanti che sovvertono e mettono in discussione le convenzioni della tradizione letteraria occidentale. La tesi è suddivisa in quattro capitoli principali. Il primo capitolo fornisce un quadro teorico del Romanzo Massimalista, tracciandone la storia il suo sviluppo attraverso opere fondamentali di critici come Tom LeClair, Franco Moretti, Frederick R. Karl e Stefano Ercolino. Il secondo capitolo si concentra sul Realismo Magico, una modalità narrativa coniata dal tedesco Franz Roh e descritta nel concetto di Magischer Realismus. Ma, è soprattutto riconosciuto per la sua eredità latinoamericana. Il Realismo Magico è anche un prodotto della postmodernità, in quanto la fusione tra realtà ed elementi soprannaturali offre agli autori postcoloniali uno strumento per esplorare temi come l'identità e l'ibridità culturale. Il terzo capitolo propone un’analisi approfondita de I versi satanici di Rushdie, mentre il quarto esamina 2666 di Bolaño. Entrambi i romanzi, caratterizzati dalla loro sensibilità postmoderna e dal contesto postcoloniale, attraversano confini culturali per indagare temi come l'identità, lo sradicamento e l'appartenenza. Attraverso questa accurata analisi, la tesi rivela l'intreccio tra massimalismo e realismo magico, sfidando le convenzioni letterarie.
