This thesis aims to investigate the translation and localization of video games, focusing specifically on "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt”, while also exploring other titles due to the significant presence of specific fantasy terminology. The study involves the analysis of the translations from the source language, with a specific focus on the game's unique fantasy terms. By examining the challenges associated with translating terms that do not exist in the real world, this research highlights the creative and cultural considerations required to preserve the fantasy of the game. The goal is to analyse how the language of the game has been adapted to different language markets and evaluate the efficiency of these translation strategies in keeping the narrative, tone, and cultural nuances of the original videogame. This study will also present a few potential translation proposals. The decision to focus on "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt," developed by CD Projekt Red, arouse from its rich narrative and complex fantasy world, making it an excellent case study in this field. The game's main voiceover is in English, and while it features Italian subtitles, it does not offer Italian dubbing. This scenario also presents an opportunity to analyse how subtitled text can influence the experience and comprehension of the players. So, in addition, the thesis will also explore the linguistic educational implications of video games. Specifically, how subtitles in video games can serve as a tool for language learning. By engaging with the game's subtitled text, players can improve their understanding of a foreign language in an interactive and enjoyable way.
