本論文は、日本の伝統的な刃物産業の進化、現状、および地域的多様性を考察するものである。歴史的な概要から始め、金属加工と鍛造技術が日本で出現した時代から昭和初期までの発展をたどる。その後、昭和中期から後期の時代に焦点を当て、技術革新、冶金学的進歩、そして堺、関、燕三条という日本の主要な刃物産地の特徴を詳細に分析する。 第3章では、著者が東京の河童橋道具街で6か月間販売スタッフとして勤務した経験を活かし、現代の刃物業界のスナップショットを提供する。この章では、顧客の好み、ビジネス戦略、そして市場を形成する最新のトレンドに焦点を当てる。最後の章では、異なる地域に拠点を置く2つの著名な企業のケーススタディを比較分析し、それぞれがどのように現代のグローバル市場の課題を克服しているかを検討する。 歴史的背景、現場での観察、ケーススタディを統合することにより、本研究は、現代の圧力や機会に直面する日本の刃物産業の強靭性と適応性を包括的に理解することを目的としている。

This thesis examines Japan’s traditional knife-making industry, emphasizing its evolution, current state, and regional diversity. Beginning with a historical overview, it traces the craft’s origins from the emergence of metalworking and forging techniques in Japan to the early Showa era. The research then transitions to a detailed analysis of the mid-to-late Showa period, exploring the industry’s technological advancements, metallurgical innovations, and the unique characteristics of its three primary knife-making regions: Sakai, Seki, and Tsubame-Sanjo. Chapter three leverages the author’s six-month experience as a sales staff member in Tokyo’s Kappabashi district to provide a snapshot of the industry today. This section highlights customer preferences, business strategies, and the latest trends shaping the market. The final chapter employs a comparative approach, presenting case studies of two prominent companies from different regions, each employing distinct strategies to navigate the challenges of the global market. By integrating historical context, firsthand observations, and case analyses, this research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the resilience and adaptability of Japan’s knife-making industry in the face of modern pressures and opportunities.
