This dissertation is a study on the representation of Naples in Antonio Mira de Amescua’s theatre, a playwright whose theatrical production belongs to the Spanish Siglo de Oro. As part of the Spanish Monarchy for many centuries, Naples maintained a close relationship with the Iberian Peninsula throughout its history. The frequent travels of nobles, courtiers, and intellectuals to the viceregal city fostered a growing fascination and interest for this place. Therefore, by carrying out a contextual and textual analysis, this study focuses on how Naples is portrayed in certain plays from Mira de Amescua's dramatic repertoire. It examines how Naples is represented, on the one hand, in light of the playwright's stay in the Parthenopean city—from 1610 to 1616—and, on the other, by considering the dramatic genre to which the plays belong. The Neapolitan setting lends the plays an exotic touch and provides insights into 17th-century reality between Spain and Italy, including power dynamics and historical and cultural aspects.
