The Russian Federation and the People's Republic of China share one of the longest borders in the world, measuring more than 4,000 kilometres. Historically, this border has reached greater lengths and the two neighbouring States have often seen tensions arise regarding the official border demarcation. The purpose of this thesis is to analyse from a historical and political perspective the evolution of the border and the policies implemented by successive Russian and Chinese State formations in the region. It will argue that in Sino-Russian relations, since their origins, the border has been of crucial importance, representing a key element in the policies of both neighbouring entities, and that it has defined the evolution of mutual relations and policies implemented, not only between the two states in question but also from a regional perspective. Furthermore, this research will focus on the asymmetrical characterisation of bilateral relations between the two States. This feature of Sino-Russian relations has greatly changed throughout the years and has always presented itself as deeply connected to the border question. Moreover, Sino-Russian border relations have greatly influenced the development of Eurasia as a whole, leading to the formation of independent States and regional cooperation. This research will thus focus on the historical development of the border and its implications in Sino-Russian and regional relations.
